Linda McAbee, CVT
President
Term Ends: January 2012

Linda McAbee graduated from Saint Petersburg College Veterinary Technology Program in 1986. She has worked in pharmaceutical sales for 12 years and previously worked at Pinellas County Animal Services for 8 years. Linda is the secretary for the newly credentialed Hillsborough Community College Veterinary Technician Program. She is also credentialed in Disaster Animal response and active in community shelters as a foster mother to kittens and Pekingese rescue. Linda has a special interest in behavior medicine for dogs and cats and an unusual love of opossums. Her own pet opossum is Stuart. Linda has been active in the Florida Veterinary Technician Association for 15 years. She is also a guest lecturer at meetings on the advancement of technicians, resume writing and interviewing procedures. She is also married to Nate McAbee and has two beautiful daughters that have both accomplished their Doctorates in microbiology. She is soon to be a Grandmother for the first time.

Linda is excited to form local meetings of CVT’s and start putting faces to names. She thinks it is very important for technicians to have the ability to meet and network with other successful technicians. Mentoring each other is our path to success.

Shayne Gardner, CVT
President-Elect

Shayne Gardner is a Parkland College graduate with 15 years of veterinary experience including general practice, academia, and private specialty practice. Currently, Shayne is the Hospital Manager at Coral Springs Animal Hospital www.coralspringsanimalhosp.com – A general, multi-specialty, and emergency critical care facility. Shayne’s passion for veterinary medicine and the advancement of our field is also shared by his wife who is a board certified surgeon (Elizabeth Rawson, DVM, MS, DACVS). Shayne’s objective is, and always has been, to increase awareness of our profession and assist in the advancement and recognition of all veterinary professionals – he is an active member of the following organizations:

NAVTA – National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America
FVTA – Florida Veterinary Technicians Association
VESPA – Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Practice Association
AAHA – American Animal Hospital Association
VSIPP – Veterinary Specialists in Private Practice

Sharyn Garrigan - Niskala, CVT Past President
Term Ends: January 2011
 

Sharyn Garrigan-Niskala, CVT has seventeen years experience as a credentialed technician; and has been an active member of the FVTA since moving to Florida in 2003. She is also registered in the state of Ohio and licensed in the state of Virginia. Sharyn currently an adjunct instructor at Brevard Community College and works part time in a busy small animal practice.

Karen Moss, CVT
Treasurer
Term Ends: January 2011

Karen Moss, CVT graduated from St Petersburg Jr College veterinary technician program in December of 1981 and practiced in a small animal clinic in South Miami for approximately 18 years. In September of 2000, Karen started teaching as an adjunct instructor in the Veterinary Technology Program at Miami Dade College and became a full time instructor in 2001. Karen still works part time in an internal medicine practice because she enjoys the work and it allows her to keep her skills. Karen has loved being a veterinary technician and she is looking forward to what the future hold for our profession. She currently has one dog, a Boston Terrier (Beatrice) who is her assistant instructor! Karen’s other interests include growing orchids and working in her yard.

Janessa Shine
Recording Secretary

Janessa Shine graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Bachelors in Biology. She then returned to school to become a Certified Veterinary Technician, graduating from Parkland College. She has been working in the veterinary field for 6 years in both general practice and private specialty practice. She is currently certified with the state of Illinois and is an active member of NAVTA and FVTA. Future interest and training include disaster animal response and is working towards becoming canine rehab certified as well. Since coming to Florida she has thoroughly enjoyed her job working at Coral Springs Animal Hospital as a specialty surgery technician. She looks forward to her involvement with FVTA working with other technicians to further our profession and increase the opportunities available to technicians across the state.
