Recent disasters are a vivid reminder that natural catastrophe and disease outbreaks can strike virtually anywhere, anytime, globally challenging the best equipped relief and recovery efforts. Anything worthwhile requires commitment and sacrifice and this is where it all begins. In the past NAHERC has been called into service to protect our animals interest. NAHERC is the nations response force to animal health emergencies and must be prepared to respond into any situation that calls for it. We are proud to be America's shining tip of the spear, and we are ready for the next assignment. Maybe you can be one of us.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), NAHERC program is comprised of Veterinary Medical Officers (VMO), Animal Health Technicians (AHT), and veterinary medical students assimilated into an elite animal health and food defense force within the emergency management response community.
During a disease outbreak or disaster, the size and scope of an incident can easily overwhelm local, State and federal animal health resources and devastate animal agriculture. The National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps (NAHERC) is the nation’s largest emergency response organization designed to provide surge capacity and sustainment of Federal veterinary assistance during an event. NAHERC assists the Federal and State response to domestic and international animal disease outbreaks, threats, or natural disasters.
The USDA NAHERC program is now accepting applications for DVM's for surge and sustainment staffing as a result of a emergency animal health response.
NAHERC is a two step process
1. Apply on USAJOBS for the NAHERC VMO position
2. Send to program coordinator a copy of your DVM transcripts
