Certification

Online Application

A Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) is a person that is a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program and has passed a rigid national competency examination. Upon graduation, students receive an Associate in Science degree in Veterinary Technology and are eligible to sit for the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). Veterinary technicians function as client educators, laboratory technicians, and advanced nursing care providers.

We encourage all technicians that have graduated from an accredited program to obtain their certification with their state associations or governing body. Certification with the FVTA is on a 2 year cycle; on December 31st of odd numbered years. The FVTA requires 15 RACE approved CE credits every 2 years for certification renewal.

New Graduate Certification

New graduate certification (first certification cycle) is provided free of charge to AVMA Accredited AS-Veterinary Technology degree holders who successfully complete the VTNE in Florida.

Transfer Certification From Another State Or Agency

This application is for the technician that is currently credentialed through another state or agency, and wishes to become credentialed in Florida through the FVTA. Proof of current credential(s), VTNE scores, and full transcripts from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program must be submitted for this application to be processed. Documents may be emailed to certification@thefvta.net.

Certification (Renewal)

Renewal applicants must be able to show proof of at least 15 RACE approved CE credits taken during the 2 year cycle. Renewals after March 1st of the 2 year cycle incur a late fee.
A late fee of $25.00 will be added to all renewals after March 1, 2024
The end of December 2023 begins a new certification cycle for the 2-year 2024-2025 certifications.

Amnesty renewal is defined as someone that is already certified through the FVTA, another state, or another agency and their credential has lapsed. Every amnesty applicant must be able to show proof of at least 15 RACE approved CE credits for each lapsed cycle. Amnesty applicants from other states or agencies must show proof of graduation from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program and proof of a passing VTNE score.
